Light Bulbs That Reduce Your Light Bill

You can save money on your energy bill and minimize environmental impacts just by updating your light bulbs to energy efficient light bulbs.

The traditional incandescent light bulbs have a filament inside that when it is heated with an electrical current it creates light.

In order to create brighter light they require thicker filaments that happen to consume more energy.

On the bright side, technology has led to the creation of light bulbs that offer a solution for bright light output while saving on electrical energy used, the energy efficient light bulbs.

- Energy efficient light bulbs use about 25-80% less energy

- They can last 3-25 times longer

- And they can provide as much light distribution and sometimes more as a traditional incandescent bulb

Replacing your home's light bulbs with models that have earned the ENERGY STAR, you can save $45 each year.

There are 3 options for energy saving light bulbs:

1) Halogen Incandescent Lights

Halogen incandescents increase bulb efficiency with an internal capsule that holds gas around a filament.

These do only meet the federal minimum energy efficient standard.

They can be used with dimmers to optimize your energy savings.

2) Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL)

Compact fluorescent light (CFL) are the

bulbs known for their spiral shape.

These cost a little more to buy than the

incandescent but the energy savings they

provide makes up for it in about 9 months.

They use about 75 percent less energy than incandescent and last ten times longer (typically about 10,000 hours).

These bulbs do contain a small amount of mercury, so they need to be recycled once they no longer work.

3) Light-Emitting Diodes (LED)

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have semiconductors that convert electricity into light known as solid-state lighting.

These are the most expensive to buy but also save the most energy.

LED lights can last 15 to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs & use only 20-25% of energy.

You can even upgrade your outdoor flood lights with some of these energy efficient light bulbs.

Other additional money saving changes to consider are installing dimmers or timmers to your lights.
